The Irrigation Department has issued a prior flood warning for several areas from November 25 to November 28, 2024, due to a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify in the coming days.
The warning highlights potential flood risks in low-lying areas surrounding river basins, including:

- Kala Oya
- Kanagarayanaru
- Parangi Aru
- Maa Oya
- Yan Oya
- Mahaweli Ganga
- Maduru Oya
- Mundeniaru
- Gal Oya
- Heda Oya
- Vila Oya
Residents in these regions are urged to remain alert and take precautions, while travelers are advised to exercise caution during this period.
The Meteorology Department also reported that the low-pressure system over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to develop into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal by November 25.
Expected Weather Impact
- Very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is forecast in parts of the Eastern Province.
- Heavy showers exceeding 100 mm are expected in the Northern, North-Central, Central, and Uva Provinces, as well as in the Hambantota District.
