Sri Lanka Braces for Potential Cyclone Development

Lanka Braces for Potential Cyclone Development

The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘Red’ weather warning as a low-pressure system has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal. This system is expected to intensify into a depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal by November 25 and may further develop, moving toward Sri Lanka's northern coast.

Rainfall and Winds Expected to Intensify

The eastern and Uva provinces are forecast to experience very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm in certain areas due to the system’s influence. Additionally, the sea areas extending from Mannar to Hambantota, encompassing regions such as Kankasanthurai, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Pottuvil, will face very rough to high sea conditions, with wind speeds potentially reaching 60-70 km/h at times.

Warnings for Naval and Fishing Communities

The Department has strongly advised fishing and naval communities to avoid venturing into the affected sea areas from November 24 onward. These advisories are crucial to ensure safety as conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly.

Precautions for the Public

Residents across Sri Lanka, especially in the eastern and northern regions, are urged to:

  • Stay vigilant during the period of November 24 to 26 for potential extreme weather.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel in areas prone to flooding and landslides.
  • Maintain contact with local disaster management authorities for updates and emergency assistance.

The public is encouraged to monitor the Department of Meteorology's updates to remain informed about changes in the weather conditions.
