Treasure Hunt Near Veyangoda Central Expressway Ends Without Discovery
Veyangoda, November 24, 2024 – The much-anticipated excavation near the Central Expressway construction site in Wanduramba, Veyangoda, came to a close yesterday evening, with authorities reporting no discovery of treasure or archaeological items of value.
The operation, which began on November 21, was launched following a court order from the Attanagalle Magistrate’s Court after the arrest of nine individuals, including a man dressed in robes, who were suspected of illegal treasure hunting at the site.
The excavation was a collaborative effort involving the Police, Special Task Force (STF), the Archaeological Department, the Road Development Authority, and the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat. Initially granted a two-day excavation period, the operation was extended by one more day after the Veyangoda Police presented additional information to the court.
Yesterday, work resumed at 9 a.m., with authorities attempting to break through a large stone that was obstructing progress. The stone was eventually crushed in front of the public, but despite efforts to thoroughly investigate the site, no treasure or items of historical importance were found.
The excavation was officially concluded at 4 p.m. on Friday, with all government officials in agreement.
